New Challenges in the IABSE TG3.1 Benchmark on Super Long Span Bridge Aerodynamics

Abstract

The IABSE Task Group 3.1 benchmark is extended from conventional turbulent-wind conditions to nonsynoptic events such as thunderstorms and downbursts. Full-scale measurements from the Gjemnessund Bridge under two wind conditions provide the target response. The paper defines a two-stage comparison between numerical predictions and the monitored bridge, reports the wind-tunnel tests used to obtain the required aerodynamic coefficients, and presents preliminary numerical benchmark results.
